What Causes Redness, Pain In Feet And Stiffness In Toes While Walking?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 May 2016
Question: I have red feet at night. The toes are bright red and are also hot. This condition seems to cause the toes to stiffen and there is mild pain when I walk. After about 10 0r 15 minutes in the morning the red and heat goes away. Is this a condition that needs too be treated or is it harmless?

Brief Answer:
Doesnt need extensive treatment if workup is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The toes and the metarsophalangeal joints need to be examined. If there is marked swelling and tenderness then joint fluid needs to be aspirated and sent for examination to look for conditions like gout, inflammatory arthritis and rarely septic arthritis though it needs to be ruled out especially if a single joint is involved. X ray foot can be done to look for evidence of erosions. CBC ,ESR and thyroid function tests can also be done as part of the workup. Paracetamol can be taken safely for the initial discomfort if its bothersome. If the workup is clear then paracetamol alone can be taken symptomatically.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
