Question: Hi, my granddaughter's serum Iron came back "5" mcg/dL, which was ordered by me,
a retired Internist, because she is fatigued. Is this level of Iron dangerous in a 20 y/o,
and if so what do you suggest. Her menses have not been negligible nor profuse!!

Brief Answer:
needs tests and treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query.
I think it would be significant.
The iron levels are low.
I would suggest testing a hemoglobin levels as well as peripheral smear. Test stool for occult blood as well.
If the hemoglobin is too low, then she may need ad blood transfusion.
otherwise, supplements of iron and vitamin B 12 and folate should be initiated.
Taking a stat dose of albendazole would be a good idea too.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
