What Causes Restricted Movement Of Tongue And Difficulty Chewing?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I do not have full range of movement of tongue on left side of mouth. also can not chew normally, it feels like I'm chewing slower & sideways instead of up & down.....making it difficult to eat solid food. I am also experiencing occasional drooling while eating. I feel strange sensation on the left side of my face from my jawline to my left ear and up to my left temple which feels more like pressure not pain. I saw a physician for my swollen tonsils & that I feel no other symptoms of allergies or sinus congestion. At the same time I told him my other symptoms. He diagnosed me as having acute sinusitis & prescribed 30mg Pseudoephedrine along with 875mg Amoxicillin. I've been taking the meds for the past 48hrs with no change to my tonsils or other symptoms. I am worried because I feel no symptoms of allergies nor have any congestion of any kind.
What other possible diagnosis can there be?? Thank You

Brief Answer:
Probably cranial nerves involvement.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First, there is need for some clarifications about your condition: did you experienced fever? the symptoms started abruptly or gradually? is there numbness of one side of face or a difference in sensation after touch?

In my opinion, there's partial cranial nerves involvement.

Other possible diagnoses, than sinusitis, include viral infection of nerves, compression of cranial nerves at the base of the skull by masses or lesions, nerve sheath lesions or tumors.

In my opinion, in order to exclude these possible causes of your symptoms and diagnose correctly your problem, there is need for head imaging studies ( MRI is the best tool ).

Imaging studies evaluate and sinuses too, if they are responsible for the symptoms.

Hope this helps. I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Best regards.

Hello Dr, thank you for reply.

In following, there was no fever at any time, the symptoms came pretty abruptly & the feeling or sensations are the same on both sides after touch. There is a slight sense of constant pressure on the left side of facE which has persisted from the beginning.

Brief Answer:
Imaging studies needed.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for the clarifications.

Fever is a key symptom related to infection, including sinusitis, so fever absence questions this diagnosis.( not entirely)

Abrupt onset is not typical for masses that expand gradually, so this fact makes the diagnosis more questionable.

I still think your symptoms are related to cranial nerves involvement.

I think, that in your case having done head imaging studies ( CT scan or MRI) is a key point in achieving a correct diagnosis.

These possibilities should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope I helped you. Best regards.
