What Causes Right-sided Tremors In Leg,hand And Jaw?

Posted on Sat, 10 May 2014
Question: I have right-sided tremors in my leg, hand and jaw. I have slurred speech, sometimes struggling to find the words. I feel "fractured"- like different parts of my body are not work in tandem. I have stiffness in my hands and my handwriting is becoming small and cramped. I lose my balance a lot. I even rely on a cane now and then to stabilize me. I am getting a 2nd opinion from a neurologist on the 29th. I believe that I have Young Onset Parkinson's Disease (I am a 44 year old female).I also believe that my mother and her sister have PD. My aunt has resting hand tremors that he says are a result of her being really tired. My mom had freezing movements and slooped over posture (she is now deceased). I am convinced that Parkinson's is the right diagnosis for me. My jaw hurts constantly because of the tremors. I have had shortness of breath - more than normal. My right hand cramps up on me all of the time. I had a freezing momemt today, but it was with my hands. I have two spoons in my hands- one in each hand. I couldn't put them in the drawer. My arms wouldn't move. I'm scaring and angry and want to know if what I am describing could be YOPD. thank YOU.

Brief Answer: Yes, your description is suggestive of PD. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for posting your query. I have gone through the symptoms you are facing. I appreciate the detailed description provided, as it is helpful in diagnosis. I agree with you that you have features of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it need not be called young onset, as young onset PD is the term used for disease onset before 40 years of age. Neurological examination would help confirm the diagnosis. I hope my reply has helped you. I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information. So it was my understanding that YOPD was for persons under 50. If you are saying that YOPD is for persons under 40, would you say that if you had to weigh my symptoms collectively, the conclusion you would come to is Parkinsons? Here is as full a list as I can put together about my symptoms: Tremors (right-sifed): foot, hand, jaw Freezing movements Slowness of movemeny Speech issues: slurring mostly, but als trying to find the word Balance issues Stiff, cramped fingers (right side only) cramped handwriting Inability to turn over in bed. I have to sit up, turn around, and lie down on the new side Hoarse speech, even though I'm not sick and no throat pain Shortness of breath I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but here's a bigger list. Thank you for your response. I realize that you cannot tell me for certain if I have Parkinson's without seeing me. I appreciate you taking the time to give me some clarity with my symptoms.

Brief Answer: Yes, your symptoms are suggestive of Parkinson's. Detailed Answer: Thank you for getting back. I have noted the list of symptoms, and I agree that they sound like Parkinson's disease (PD). YOPD refers to onset before 40 years of age. Best wishes, Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
