Question: Hi Dr Grief, In early February I went to a wedding with loud music, in the same week a few days later there was a fire drill at work and the evacuation alarm was very loud. I started noticing ringing in my ears every now and then for about 2 weeks. Then after 2 weeks the ringing got louder and was constant. It was at its worst for about 4 weeks and is now slowly starting to gradually get better. Especially during the day it's much more pleasant but still at night and when it a quite room it's very noticeable. It's on both ears but much stronger in the right then in the left. In addition to that, in the last week I started to hear a popping and clicking sound and woke up one morning with discharge from the left ear. I don't have any symptoms of dizziness or vomiting, my hearing fells fine, as to say I don't have any trouble with it. I do have a sensation of the ears felling blocked. Do you think it could be built up ear wax, or catarrh?

Brief Answer: Acoustic trauma with ear infection. Detailed Answer: Hi sir , In my opinion, your first complaint of ringing sensation in the ear is because of acoustic trauma (damage of the hearing nerve cells because of exposure to loud noise). Here the ringing sensation l gradually reduces over time. Vasoactive drug like betahistine can be helpful in such cases. It can be used along with multivitamins for your nerve stability if it is still troubling you. You may also consider a short course of steroids if needed. You can discuss about these medicines with your local ENT surgeon. Popping sensation with ear discharge may be due to ear infection. It needs antibiotics and antiinflammatory drugs. Even ruptured ear drum because of ear infection can produce ringing sensation. Therefore in my opinion, you should visit an ENT specialist. An audiogram is to be done to check your hearing nerve status and middle ear conditions. But before concluding I want to know if you have any previous history of ear infection, or hole in ear drum? Good you don't have any dizziness or vomiting. Blocked sensation can be because of wax/ euatachian catarrh. However ear infection heads the list of possibilities. Therefore fix an appointment with your ENT. Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to ask any more doubts. You can send me the audiogram report also for the opinion. Thanks.......
