A sprain is an injury to the ligament- A strong band of tissue that connects one bone to another at a joint. The severity of sprains are classified according to the amount of tissue tearing, affect on joint stability, pain and swelling.
A second degree sprain involves a broad soft tissue damage, with moderate joint instability, partial tear of ligament, moderate pain and swelling. It can be treated conservatively with rest, ice, splints and compression bandage with pain killers.
