What Causes Seeing Of A Shadow In The Visual Field?
Question: A few weeks ago I notice a dark shadow from the bridge of my nose into about a third of my visual field in my left eye when my right eye was closed. After experimenting with this in different ways it appears that what I am "seeing" is actually information coming from my right eye and showing up in my left. For example. I closed my right eye and covered it with something dark and the shadow in my left eye was darker... I closed my right eye and shined a light against the eye lid and a light showed up in left eye. I have seen an ophthalmologist to be evaluated because in addition to the shadow the left eye is painful around the socket and when I move it. He said the retina is healthy and the optical nerve is fine. Is it normal for information from the right eye to be "seen" in the left? If it isn't an eye problem it seems it would be a brain problem... Could my brain be trying to fill in images in my left visual field with information from my right eye? Any ideas of what is happening?
Brief Answer:
Probably eye dominance issues. Get a brain MRI done too.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
In my opinion, the concerns you describe are related to eye dominance (eyedness), for analogy a sort of handedness.
Normally the input from one eye should end in the respective area of the brain and should not pass or be perceived in the other eye, I think is your brain that is playing a role in such distortion.
Normally, besides eye exam and visual field charts a brain MRI is necessary to complete the examinations and to understand better your condition.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thank you for your reply. After doing some research on eyedness I do think it is part of what is going on and I now have more details to share with my doctor that will help with the direction of treatment.
