What Causes Separation Of A Fingernail From Its Nail Bed After Traumatic Injury?
Question: Mashed my thumb in car door two weeks ago. Thumbnail turned black except for one spot. Periodic changes to nail which is no longer black but looks dead. Sensitive to touch. Nail is now coming loose. Will new nail grow in place when old one falls loose or will some sort of surgery typically be required. No Dr visit required yet. Respond to YYYY@YYYY

I have gone through your complaints and usually the new nail grows once the traumatic loose nail falls off. It falls off on its own without surgery.
But sometimes it is seen that if there is severe injury in proximal nail fold where the nail matrix is located then either the new nail can be dystrophic or fails to grow.
