What Causes Sever Abdomnal And Back Pain After Medical Abortion?
Question: Hi I underwent a medical abortion in which I was given a combination of ru486 and ru487 (administered as a vaginal suppository 48hrs after being given ru486). The ru487 was administered 3 days ago and since then I have been having severe pain in my abdomen and back. The pain has increased a bit since yesterday. It is quite similar to the pain experienced during my menses but is more painful. Also, my belly has swollen up slightly. Please advise me. Am I at risk? Or is this usual?
Brief Answer:
Normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi
These tablets are known to cause the pain you described.
This is the pain because your uterus is contracting and trying to push out the pregnancy.
I hope you have got an ultrasound scan done to know location of pregnancy before taking medicines as this leads to other complications if scan is not done.
If pain is too much see your doctor who will prescribe medicines to reduce pain and prevent infection with antibiotics.

My doctor is on leave for a couple of days due to which I can't visit him.
Could you please advise me on what painkillers are safe to consume during this time? I had taken a dose of 400mg ibuprofen yesterday and that gave me some relief for about 6 hours but I'm not sure if it is safe. I had also consumed meftal spas for the pain. Is it safe?
With regards to infections, what are some of the common antibiotics that should be taken to avoid them (my doctor has not prescribed any)
How would I know when I have passed the embryo out of my system?
Finally, could you please give me an estimate as to how many days these cramps would go on for?
Also, thank you very much for your help Dr. Koregol. Really appreciate it.
Brief Answer:
Prescription
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Since you have taken ibuprofen, it should reduce pain. It is safe to repeat it if pain has not subsided.
You need to get ultrasound scan done to check if abortion is complete after bleeding.
Unfortunately we dont prescribe drugs online. Hence you have to see a doctor personally to get prescription for antibiotics.
These cramps generally last for about 2 days after last tablet. You need to get tested if you didnot abort.
