What Causes Severe Anxiety Associated With Palpitations, Sweating And Twitching?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Mar 2016
Question: Hello Sir/Madam,
I want to discuss a common problem which I have been facing for more than 3 months now. Recently, I noticed that I become tensed/anxious when someone asks me to introduce myself, when someone points me in front of a group or when I have to speak or present in front of large number of people.
Due to this my heart beat increases - like my heart comes in my mouth-, I sweat and most problematic thing is that my mouth twitches. The right side of my face and an area close to where Maxilla is located twitches.
I don't smoke, drink and have normal weight. I have normal lifestyle as well.
Please guide me and advice me on this as it is really decreasing my level of confidence. I am developing a sort of social phobia.
Please help.
Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of panic disorder.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Hi & Welcome.
Thanks for posting your concern on HCM.
I went through your query in detail & can understand the uncomfort that you must be having with your set of symptoms. It seems that you are suffering from panic disorder which is manifesting as frequent panic attacks.
A panic attack is sudden exacerbation of anxiety associated with palpitations, sweating, tremors, twitchings, difficulty breathing, etc. In between attacks, the person usually remains worried about further attacks and starts avoiding situations where he fears such attacks.
This is nothing but an intense bout of anxiety.
Since you are having recurrent symptoms hence I would advise you consult a psychiatrist for a detailed psychological assessment and further treatment. There are effective treatment options like medication or counselling or psychotherapy which will help you overcome your problems.
In addition I also advise you to do relaxation exercises like deep breathing & progressive muscular relaxation which are the effective ways to beat anxiety. Doing them daily will help bring down baseline anxiety level.
I hope I could answer your query. In case of any further question, please feel free to ask.
Best regards.

Thank you for your immediate response.
Do I need to make any dietary changes? I mean what all I can take more to reduce anxiety. Second, what are progressive muscular relaxation exercises? Can you suggest some? And if I start these exercises today- deep breathing and other exercises you mentioned- in what time I could see the changes?

Brief Answer:
You need to have certain dietary changes.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for your reply and the compliments.
There are certain foods you need to avoid like Coffee and caffeinated drinks (soft drinks, etc), chocolates or candies which help in reducing the stress or anxiety.
Progressive muscular relaxation exercises will help you to lower your tension and stress and help you relax when you feel stress or anxious. This can be done in the following ways:
1. Tense (contract) systematically some muscles like that of neck and shoulders, then
2. Release (relax) the tensed muscles gradually.
It will help you feel very much relaxed and it also helps reduce problems such as palpitations (due to increased heart beats), sweating, tremors, etc.
Done properly the positive result may be seen as early as a couple of days.
Hope I could answer your follow up query.
Take care.
