What Causes Severe Back Pain While On Hydrocodone?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Sep 2017
Question: I have been having severe pain in my back, seeming to be on both sides, sometimes in mid back. I fell on July 2, went to the emergency room, diagnosed with T11 compression fracture, had kyphoplasty there which seemed to help for a few days. However, the pain returned in about 4-5 days and has not let up. That was tolerable until last Wednesday, when I went shopping and after 1 hour of walking around, the pain became unbearable. Came home, took a Hydrocodone that night, but Thursday it got worse. Went to ER again, had a CT scan, doctor found nothing new in the spinal area, no kidney stones, gallbladder has been removed. Nobody can tell me what's wrong. I had to get up to go to the bathroom tonight and had to get my husband to help me out of bed because the pain was so bad. I really need some help but don't want to go back to the ER since they couldn't find anything. Is there anything you can tell me? XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Better to get an Xray

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

It is possible that you have other compression fractures.

You may need to get a new Xray or CT scan of the spine to confirm.

It would be helpful to be on artificial PTH and Alendronate therapy which will prevent fractures.

To get relief from the bone pain, nasal spray of Calcitonin is usually very helpful.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

I'm sorry, I don't know what PTH and Alendronate therapy are According to the CT Scan, I don't have bone issues. They told me the pain was muscular. Any ideas for that?

Brief Answer:
Medication Physiotherapy

Detailed Answer:
Muscular pain is usually due to bad posture and unusable strain.

Avoid bending forwards or lifting weights. You can take muscle relaxant like Tablet Diclofenac with Thicolchicoside combination twice a day for 5 days.

Physiotherapy in the form of TENS therapy will also help.

I guess he's okay. I don't think he could give me a good diagnosis having not seen me.

Brief Answer:
There is nothing better than a face to face clinical examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Your point is valid regarding you not being satisfied without a proper clinical examination before making the diagnosis.

This platform though however helps patients communicate with doctors about the various possibilities of the diagnosis, risk assessment and prognosis and this helps to save time and leaves toy feeling more secure with the required knowledge.

You have a high risk of developing further compression fractures because of Osteoporosis. This is why I recommended you to get all Xray to look for the same.

THE PTH (Para Thyroid Hormone) therapy and Alendronate help to reduce the progression of Osteoporosis and thus reduce further fracture risk.
Calcitonin spray will help to reduce pain due to fracture in Osteoporosis.

Please do visit a Surgeon face to face for a thorough clinical examination which is second to none in importance.

Good day.
