What Causes Severe Cough And Sore Throat After Taking Mucinex?

Question: I had sore throat on thursday, took a pain killer. On friday i had sever sore throat, fever, headacahe. I started using Mucinex (Fast max) from friday. I did not have fever but had severe cough, sore throat and lot of flem from friday night. On Saturday the cough increased and also the flem. The sore throat decreases when I take the Mucinex but the cough and flem remain the same. It has been the same on Sunday and even today. Presently I can see lot of flem, sore throat and severe cough.

After reading your clinical history it appears that you are most probably having
upper respiratory tract infection(URTI).

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice you
Antiseptic chlorhexidine/betadine Mouth Wash twice daily ,
Antihistaminic tablet at night ,
Saline nasal rinse twice daily &
acetaminophen (Tylenol) twice daily .

Continue Mucinex fastmax .

You will get relief.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have few doubts

1) Do the above mentioned medicines need prescription? If they dont, can you tell me what exactly should I buy for Antiseptic chlorhexidine/betadine Mouth Wash and
Antihistaminic tablet. Like which brand? I cant find proper (Antiseptic chlorhexidine/betadine Mouth Wash when searching online).
2) On the Mucinex fastmax, it says not to take with any other drug having acetaminophen. So when should do I take Tyenol? And how many times should i take Mucinex every day?

Sorry for the number of questions I am asking.

This medication will not need prescription.

1) Antiseptic hexetidine mouthwash twice daily - don't swallow
2) Antihistaminic tablet - Zyrtec 5mg in night
3) If you have Maximum Strength Mucinex Fast-Max for Cold, Flu & Sore Throat Liquid then use it thrice daily .

You can use Tyenol when you have excess sore throat , fever & headache .

Use Saline nasal rinse twice daily it will thin flem & decrease cough .
