What Causes Severe Cough While Suffering From Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Question: my father who is 83 years old bedridden because of rheumatoid arthritis is of late coughing a lot and the local physician says there is infection in lungs and chest due to flem. can you suggest a treatment for the same or a specialist in XXXXXXX to whom I can contact for treatment. Also I would like to know how to identify that the infection is reduced. appreciate your earliest response.

Hi,

Thanks for posting the query on HCM. After going through your query, I would like to comment the following:

1. Your father seems to be suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis with probable lung infection at present.

2. The symptoms of your father need to be evaluated at present. There is a possibility of lung infection considering the symptoms. Do remember that presence of cough with phlegm , fever, breathlessness of short duration could be a lung infection. Also Rheumatoid arthritis can independently involve the lung, the so called "Rheumatoid lung" which has a long duration symptoms or the symptoms are more persistent and do not respond to symptomatic management alone.

3, At present a detailed evaluation would include - Chest Xray, Sputum examination and blood counts. If rheumatoid lung is suspected then a CT scan thorax may be required.

4. Thus a detailed evaluation by a Pulmonologist, as advised above is required.
