What Causes Severe Cough With Pain Beneath The Left Chest Cavity?

Question: One last question hopefully; with all this coughing I've had is it possible that it would make me sore under my left pectoral. I just noticed this a couple of hours ago when I coughed it would feel like bruiselike pain in that area. Is this something to be concerned about? It does not hurt when I breathe in deeply, just when I cough.
Brief Answer:
Yes forceful coughing can cause muscle pull which is painful.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
Yes, hectic and forceful cough can make you sore anywhere in the chest wall, abdomen and back.During violent coughing, all these muscles and ligaments contract forcefully and at times there may be muscle pull in one such muscle which may cause pain during any movement. Sometimes there may be even fracture of a rib. This is called cough fracture. You should take rest and while coughing support the painful area with your hand. This may help minimize the pain. No other treatment is required. The pain will subside on it's own over a period of time.
Take care.
