default
Posted on Fri, 5 Aug 2016
Question: I am 84 years old man. I think I have moderate signs of dehydration. I have had this condition before a couple of years ago. I went to the emergency room at that time and they put me in the hospital for a few days. I have not been outdoors sweating. I have been drinking a lot of gator ad and drinking water in the last few hours. My condition is not getting worse but is not getting better. Do you think I should go to the emergency room?

Brief Answer:
Need medical attention

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr. Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

A good urine output and a moist tongue indicate that you are adequately hydrated.
Since you say you are dehydrated, I presume you have decreased urine output and dry tongue.

You do not have any risk factors like persistent vomiting or diarrhea or increased sweating that may cause dehydration.
You are drinking enough fluids also.

Since you are dehydrated in spite of all these, you need to visit your doctor/ER.

You have not mentioned whether you are a diabetic. Diabetes is one important cause of dehydration.

Regards,
Dr.Barani
