What Causes Severe Depression When Diagnosed With Celiac Disease And Thyroid Disorders?

Thank you! She had her stomach scooped again last week and the Dr. Said there was undigested food in her stomach which should not have been there. He thought she may have thyroid issues and I'd doing bloodwork on her. He also recommended she see a phycologist because of her severe depression. My daughter is beautiful but has no self esteem. She found her father dead when she was seven. He committed suscide. She will not talk about it and does not want to see a therapist. Her dad had bipolar and thyroid problems. That was 10 years ago. I think she may have stuffed a lot of her emotions concerning her dad. I am not big on anti depressants but would not object to anti aniexty medication for her. I am worried sick about her.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
Celiac disease and thyroid disorders are both autoimmune and can co-occur. If she is hypothyroid, this could account for these symptoms. I would get blood testing to rule out thyroid issues first. Otherwise, depression is a possibility. She may benefit from an antidepressant such as Lexapro, or psychotherapy.

Detailed Answer:
I'm sorry your daughter is suffering. She clearly suffered a trauma and may well be depressed currently. Medication is helpful, but therapy is also important. A combination of the the two is the most effective treatment. Antidepressants are first-line anxiety treatment when it comes to medication. CBT is a good option for therapy. I do offer CBT on this website if she's interested.
