What Causes Severe Flank Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I have severe, boring type of pain in my left flank. It started on Friday night and I have been only able to control it with Hydramorphone Hydrachloride elixer which I use for break through pain on top of regular slow release Hydramorphone tablets. I have a history of acute pancreatitis but this pain is far more severe in the flank than my central upper abdomen. Also have a history of kidney stones but currently no blood in my urine. Any ideas as to the cause please?

Brief Answer:
Severe pain could be dueto Kidney stone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that looking at the site of pain and previous history of kidney stone your pain at flank is most likely to be due to Kidney stone.

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical assessment and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and Culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of the abdomen
3) Plain X-Ray abdomen

In the mean while start taking broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexine along with urinary anti spasmodic like Spasmo Proxyvon like and Nitrofurantoin twice daily with urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Further treatment will depend upon results of these tests and final diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Many thanks for your input. Had to go to the emergency department today as the pain was no longer responding to pain meds. They did blood work which came back normal and also performed an abdo CT scan. It too was normal yet the pain persists.
Was told to just be grateful that everything appeared normal and continue with regular pain relief. I find this very frustrating as my blood pressure reached 200/110 and my pulse was 114 - both indicative of the degree of pain I am experiencing.
Can you think of anything else that could be causing this pain please?

Brief Answer:
Difficult to make comments.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for feedback.
It is really difficult to make comments unless any clinician does clinical examination personally.

Please consult qualified General Surgeon or Cardiologist .You need to get hospitalised and take pain killers in Injectable form to get relief from pain..

Thanks and Regards.
