What Causes Severe Lower Abdominal Pain On The Left Side?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I am a 24yo female. Yesterday I started having intense pain over my left ovary. It felt like constant gnawing pain, that transferred to my back and through my left leg and then I would get a sharp pain right over my ovary which would last between 2-5 minutes. Obviously I went to the hospital where they gave me some pain medication and ran some tests which were all normal. I got a vaginal ultrasound that didn't reveal anything although the doctor couldn't see my ovary clearly because of some shadow. I was discharged and told to go home and self treat with paracetamol. The pain hasn't subsided and I'm getting a bit worried since the doctor clearly stated she did not diagnose, she only cleared dangerous concerns and then decided it wasn't anything serious. There were no signs of cysts or bleeding but I am worried since the pain remains and I feel "heavy" in my lower abdomen. I am not pregnant although the ultrasound revealed I am ovulating, which also is strange since my period ended on Thursday which means I'm on day 7 of my cycle, which has always been regular and consistent and therefore I should not be ovulating for another week. I am also concerned since she didn't ever get a clear picture of my left ovary and I was in extreme pain and discomfort during the ultrasound, especially when she aimed the "ultrasound-head" toward my left side and put pressure. What can I do? Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Can be a renal cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The pain in the left side that you have can be due to a small ovarian cyst or a urinary cause. A urine infection or a calculus needs to be ruled out. Do get a routine urine test done. A course of antibiotics may be needed for relief. Do attend an ER again in case the pain persists.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
Small ureteric calculus can be missed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Small calculi in ureter may go undetected on an ultrasound scan. Take an over the counter antispasmodic. Can be an intestinal colic also.
Hope my answer is helpful.
