Question: Hello, i have a2 and half month old baby. I'm suffering from severe lower back pain due to which I'm unable to nurse my baby or move freely around. I desperately need to take a painkiller for immediate relief like powergesic mr but am scared as to how long i will be unable to feed my baby and how long it will remain in my system. Is there any alternative other than paracetamol as it is ineffective against my pain level.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there. welcome to HCM,

I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns, I need some more details regarding your symptoms like,

Do you have low back pain that started after delivery?

Does the pain radiate to the legs as well?

Is it assosiated with any tingling or numbness?

Usually low back pain can be caused by certain changes in the bones due to ageing and excess stress on the joints due to upright and unusual postures.

For low back pain,I would usually recommend Tablet Diclofenac 75mg twice a day and Tablet Carisoprodol 350mg twice for 5 days after meals and Tablet Ranitidine 150mg twice a day for 5 days before meals. Diclofenac is a better pain killer than Paracetamol and does not enter the baby through breast feeding in normal regular doses. Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant to help relax your tight muscles. It does not harm the baby but can cause slight sedation for the baby on the first dose you take. The Medicine enters the baby within 3 to 4 hours of taking orally and gets excreted at about the same time.

Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Your can apply pain killer get or spray like Volini as well.

Do follow these tips and precautions as well. Avoid bending forwards or lifting weights. Apply hot packs to the painful regions. Perform back extension exercises and straight leg raising exercises. Avoid unusual posture while sleeping. Try to sleep on your back and straight. Do not sit for more than half an hour continuously. Do get up and walk around and stretch your back.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thank you for your reply. Yes the pain started after delivery. No there is no numbness of tingling during. And does not radiate to my legs. It's a very strong muscular pain above and around the tail bone. Will the medicines prescribed integer with the feed? Im very scared to feed baby if any side effects. I was advised against using any diclofenac products during pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
You can avoid Diclofenac and try the given remedy

Detailed Answer:
You seem to be having Coccydynia or tail bone subluxation due to difficult or prolonged delivery.

The medicines will not interfere with the baby's health as studies have been done to prove the same. Besides got are taking only for 5 days. You can apply ice or warm packs, whichever gives you relief. Perhaps this week gone you good relief to avoid you from using the medication.

You must perform Sitz bath, where you can sit in a tub of container of warm water with 2 tablespoons of added salt. Do this for 15 minutes twice a day. This shall reduce the oedema and give you drastic relief. Also use doughnut shaped sponge cushion to sit on.

Do try these remedies and revert to me on your progress. You can avoid the medication if you fear from using them and try these methods.
