What Causes Severe Pain And Swelling In The Ankle Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Mar 2017
Question: My wife has severe pain in her ankle area and it is swollen. She went to an ER clinic seven days ago. they gave her 20 sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/10mg tb to take 2 per day. Also given hydrocodone/acetaminophen 5-325 tb. She is in kidney failure at 26% so I know she has to be careful of pain medication. ER took x-rays and found no broken bones and suggested it may be cellulitis. We are in Florida and her regular doctors are in Michigan. Any suggestions.

Brief Answer:
Limb elevation, ice, watchful waiting

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

It is best she keep the affected limb elevated. Apply ice to reduce pain and inflammation.

If there is any pus discharge, the sample needs to be sent for antibiotic culture and sensitivity to find the right antibiotic to fight the infection.

If she isn't responding to the medication, by either not improving or getting worse, it is best she be admitted at the ER for intravenous antibiotics and fluids. Do keep a watch on her condition because sepsis can spread fast if not tackled early.

Get her Serum Uric acid tested as well. Gout can also present with similar symptoms. Avoid meat and their gravies. Keep well hydrated. Avoid alcohol.

I hope I have answered your query.
