What Causes Severe Pain At The Hip Joint Area While Walking?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Nov 2016
Question: I have a job where I typically walk 30-40 miles per week. I recently started experiencing severe pain at my left hip joint area. When I feel around the area it feels like a muscular knot (similar to the ones that I frequently get in my shoulders). Walking up stairs intensifies the pain if I start up the stairs with my left foot. If I start with my right, the pain does not intensify.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,,

Thank you for the query.

It seems that you have quadratus femoris syndrome. This syndrome is usually seen in long distance walkers and the pain is typically seen in the hip joint area. The affected muscle is inflammed due to overuse and that leads to painful hip movements when the inflammed muscled is used.

I suggest you should take anti inflammatory tablets, with hot fomentation and local hot gel application.

If the pain is not relieved, you should get an MRI of hip joint done to rule out any other possible causes of the pain, like bursitis, early avascular necrosis of femoral head, primary osteoarthritis of the hip joint etc.

Do not do strenous activities or long distance walking till the pain subsides completely.
Hip muscle strengthening exercises will help to avoid such complaints in the future.

If you have any follow up queries, you can get back to me anytime.
Thank you
