What Causes Severe Pain Between Middle And Ring Finger Knuckles?

Question: My wife age 65 woke up with severe pain in her left hand centered in her middle and ring finger. Her hand in those areas feels numb. When one presses on the hand in those areas she feels sharp shooting pain in palm and wrist. No cuts, bites, brusing or any other outward things are visible. She also says this pain comes and goes even without any pressure. Cannot exteen fingers fully outward without oain. This started about six hours ago and has gotten progressively worse, pain medicine is not doing anything. Took 2 200mg ibuprofen tabs at 10pm And again at 3am. Any thoughts?
Brief Answer:
Acute carpal tunnel syndrome
Detailed Answer:
hi,
thanks for your question. your wife's symptoms are consistent with acute carpal tunnel syndrome.
she may have slept awkwardly on this hand which has precipitated this problem.
an regular antiinflammatory medication such as ibuprofen will help. other methods to help relieve the symptoms include a wrist splint and regular tendon gliding excercises.
if the pain does not improve a local and steroid injection into the carpal tunnel can help and ultimately carpal ligament release surgically.
I hope this answers your question.
best wishes
