Question: My husband age 60, has been having severe arm, hand and side cramps for almost a month. He drinks about 4 bottles of water a day, along with coffee and tea. He may have an occasional alcoholic drink. About once or twice a month. 2 years ago he had a cervical fusion. He does have arthritis in neck, hands and knees. He is a farmer and does a lot of physical activities with hands. The severe cramps have me buffaloed. He quit smoking 2 years ago and gained about 12-15 lbs. in the past 3 months he has gained another 20 lbs. any suggestions?

Please, get his TSH measured!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about these cramps that you have reported. I have reviewed this information fully and am of the opinion that we should evaluate the functioning of his thyroid gland. rapid weight gain is often among the first signs of hypothyroidism. This causes fluid retention and increased pressure on nerves which is responsible for these diffuse nervous manifestations. This will make a good start and depending on the results and exam findings, more possibilities can be considered.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
