Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Do you have any calf swelling ?

Have you hurt your leg recently ?

Usually causes for such severe pain in the leg could be attributed to Deep vein thrombosis, Peripheral vascular disease, Chronic muscle spasm, knee or ankle arthritis.

Since you are finding relief when the limb is lifted up, it is mostly deep venous thrombosis or muscle spasm because usually hanging the limbs down gives relief in Peripheral vascular disease.

I suggest that you try to find the source of maximal pain by physically touching your knee to calf once it is raised. The pain gets relieved because when the limb is elevated, the swelling gets drained away.

I recommend that you apply hot water bottle to the area that hurts. Avoid pressing the calf muscles, because if it is a clot, it could break away and cause obstruction elsewhere. If the knee or ankles hurt, ice them.

Avoid bearing weight on the affected limb for now. You may need to show your Doctor because deep vein thrombosis can be very dangerous.

Keep well hydrated with 2 litres of water daily.

You can wear elastic compression stockings and see if you get relief.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thanking you.
