What Causes Severe Rectal Pain In A Diabetic Person?
Question: Hello Doctor,
My Father in law has a medical history of diabetes, BP & lung infections.
SInce past 10 days he is suffering from severe pain in rectum & urine passage has stopped. Upon consulting general physician he advised antibiotics & catherer for urine collection. He also told that there is a tumour in rectum which has to be removed surgically & sent for biopsy.
Can you help me understand the reason for his condition? Also, is surgery mandatory?
Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Hello Mrs Mamta,
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for the query. I understand your concern.
It is indeed a serious problem, if there is tumor in rectum. It can be confirmed by colonoscopy and biopsy of the tumor tissue to confirm if it is cancerous.
After that will need a CT Scan of the stomach and pelvis to look for extent of tumor.
Depending on these reports, the treatment options include surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.
Also without confirming the diagnosis, better to avoid surgery unless patient has intestinal obstruction (tumor blocking the intestine causing tummy distension, vomiting and constipation).
Hope this answers your query.
Wish him a speedy recovery.
Happy to help.
