What Causes Severe Sore Throat, Sneezing And Cough With Yellow Sputum?

Question: I've had a sore throat for 5-6 days. I'm starting to cough up yellow sputum. Today, blowing my nose and sneezing more, throat has sharp pain when I cough. No body aches, headaches, no trouble swallowing food, no swollen glands. Will antibiotics help, or does this sound viral? I've been off work for 3 days now, when can I go back to work without being contagious? Thank you.

Since you are already coughing up yellow sputum, it implies there is a bacterial infection and in such a situation antibiotics will definitely help.

You will be contagious till the sputum is yellow colored and it is advisable to take rest and not go for work.

In my patients i would normally start on antibiotics like amoxicillin 500mg thrice a day for 5 days and advice them to take steam inhalation 2-3 times a day.

I would advice you to gargle with warm salt water 2-3 times a day and avoid cold and sour foods.
