Posted on Wed, 17 Feb 2016
Question: My wife 69 yr old suddenly started vomiting with dirreaha and this morning was itching all over. She feels better but I am concerned that I must do something besides keeping her fluids up. The itching is something I haven't seen before. We ate the same things in a pizzeria last night but she became ill within an hour and a half.FYI my wife has a slight rash on her back upper chest and on her arms with itching

Brief Answer:
Give her appropriate symtpomatic treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for asking on HCM.

I have read your query and understand the problem of diarrhea and vomiting.

As per the facts you posted here, your wife might be having gastroenteritis (mostly viral or sometimes bacterial) because of which she is having loose motions, itching and vomiting.

However, you may give her below mentioned treatment.

1) Start giving Probiotics (like lactic acid bacillus-double strength tablets) three to four times daily to restore the normal bacterial flora which are available over the counter at nearby pharmacy.

2) Give her lots of fluids (water) and fruit juices throughout the day which will be helpful to avoid fluid-electrolytes imbalance.

She can also take sachets of WHO Oral Rehydration Salts mixed with water to maintain electrolyte balance.

3) No oily or spicy foods.

Tab.ONDANSETRON 8 mg twice daily for vomiting and Cap.PANTOPRAZOLE 40 mg Before breakfast if she has gas trouble which are available over the counter.

4) Tab.LEVOCETIRIZINE 10 mg twice daily for itching and rash.

5) Antibiotics (NORFLOXACIN-TINIDAZOLE combination) can be reserved if there is no improvement within 1 or 2 days but at present there is no much need of them.

We would expect that she will start to improve within 1 to 2 days or may be earlier with this treatment.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
