What Causes Sharp Pain Behind The Ears?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Dec 2016
Question: I have had significant pain (just below both ears) for about five weeks. It is located the very top of my Mandible Lower Jaw Bone (kind of near my ear lobe and at a depth of about one eighth inch). "Allergy Doctor" and "Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist" found no amalies. Has anybody experienced this type of pain. If yes, what was the cause and what did the MDs do to eliminate it.

Brief Answer:
Probably muscular pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Seems to me that the pain you describe is of muscular origin, more exactly related to myofascial trigger points on sternocleidomastoid muscles on both sides.

Muscles can be damaged by several causes such overuse, trauma, bad posture, metabolic conditions etc.

It is necessary to get evaluated by a spine Specialist in order to get a correct understanding of your condition, since other Doctors didn't find anything.

If the condition is confirmed, physical therapy may help improve your pain.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.

The pain doesn't feel like a muscle pull.
I did have Physical Therapy on my neck in Mid- Sept. due to neck pain. The flexibility was improved considerably, and the neck pain was reduced. The neck pain then went away and the ear pain started a little later.
That was followed by an MRI of my neck the last week of Sept. The results showed major disks and Vertibra problems. Is it possible. that I 'm dealing with pinched nerves in my neck?

Brief Answer:
It is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

It is possible that upper cervical nerves to cause such symptoms too, since there are major discs problems at the neck, however, neurological examination is necessary to assess the distribution and any sensory changes if there is a nerve root pattern or not.

Nerves may be compressed at their exit from spinal cord or during their pathway.

More exactly, when I mentioned muscular origin I mean that the insertion of the muscles at the bones may be stretched too.

Both these conditions are possible.

Again, an evaluation by a spine Specialist, or Neurologist is necessary to understand better your condition.

Hope I helped you.

Kind regards.
