Brief Answer:
hi and welcome

Detailed Answer:
well, for such injuries it is typical that pain may be more intensive after few days or week and may persist for 2-3 weeks. in such cases intercostal nerves and muscles are contused and it can cause some pain. it may be serious only if pneumothorax develop and then he would have breathing difficulties constantly. If there is pain only in deep inhalation, then this is expected after such injuries. He should rest, continue with ice packs, and nonsteroid painkillers or if pain worsens he can try with steroid injections. But it smply must pass certain period and he will feel better gradually. WIsh you good health. Regards
