Brief Answer:
cartilage tear
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The sharp shooting pain in the knee often has to do with a meniscus tear. The meniscus is the cartilage that lines the joint space. Sometimes a flap of this moves around and when it gets pinched it can cause pain and locking of the knee. The only way to have a firm diagnosis of cartilage tear is to get an MRI.
First see your regular doctor and then you may need a referral to an orthopedic doctor for an opinion about whether or not surgery is needed to repair the meniscus.
A knee brace may help stabilize the knee.
