What Causes Small Streaks Of Blood In Semen?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I Have noticed what appears to be blood in my semen for the past couple weeks. Is this a problem that I need to address ASAP? I am 62 years old with a slightly enlarged prostate, and PSA tests indicate a 56% chance of prostate cancer. Are these related?

Brief Answer:
may be related to the prostate

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that it is related to the mild enlargement of the prostate. Prostatic cancer is one of the rarer causes.

Semen contains fluid from the seminal vesicles, prostate, epididymis and vas deferens. These are different parts of the male genital tract.

This means that inflammation, infection, trauma, stones or any issue involving any of these areas can result in blood.

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia- non cancer enlargement ) and prostatic cancer can both be associated with blood in the semen.

Infection would normally be associated with additional symptoms in most men such as pain, discomfort on urination etc

If you are experiencing pain or any other troubling symptoms then it would be best to see a doctor as soon as possible for treatment.

IF the blood is not associated with any additional symptoms and your prostate check was within the last few months then you can monitor for now but if it continues for over 2 months.

Summary: (1) it is a common problem
(2)likely related to enlargement of your prostate but if there are additional symptoms then you should be seen as soon as possible
(3) if no additional symptoms and had a recent check up then can wait to see if resolves

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
