Question: I have social anxiety/performance anxiety for many years. Nothing has worked as far as medications. I have heard beta blockers like propranolol are good for situational anxiety. I am interested because I am going to be doing exposure therapy to develop confidence. Also, my pdoc said Nardil or Parnate would be good?
Brief Answer:
Better to take paroxetine and relaxation exercise
Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.
In social or performance anxiety, antidepressant like SSRIs which include paroxetine or escitalopram are more effect than nardil/parnate. Better to take these drugs with propranolol that would help you to control anxiety. You can also take low dose benzodiazepine on sos basis.
With that, you can do relaxation exercise like JPMR or deep breathing exercise to control the somatic symptoms. Exposure therapy would also help you, but these relaxation exercise and medicine would give you faster recovery. You should consult a psychiatrist for proper treatment plan.
In case, you need my help, you can ask.
