What Causes Sore Throat Associated With Mucus And Throat Tightening?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Mar 2016
Question: Hi. Lately I've had a lot of mucus production and a somewhat sore throat. Really not much trouble swallowing but I do feel like throat is tightening as I can feel like a vitamin or a pill going down where I used to not really feel that. Today I was just feeling around on my throat and noticed it can move side to side pretty easily and I can hear a grinding sound as it moves. Really no other symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Throat examination and medication. The grinding sound is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get a throat examination and medication including an anti-allergic, mucolytic, anti-inflammatory medication, medicated gargles and steam inhalation. Anti-reflux medication may be added. This is a common symptom during and after a sore throat. It will settle in a some time.

2. The grinding sound as you move the larynx (voice box) side to side is normal and known as Muir's Crackle. The sound is due to the cricoid cartilage grinding against the vertebral column. (Absence of the laryngeal crackle is abnormal and known as Bocca's sign).

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
