What Causes Sore Throat With Swallowing Difficulty?
GERD or a nutritional deficiency; need your take on it
Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I have 2 options in mind:
1. Is a nutritional deficiency (e.g. vitamin B12 deficiency) that can cause sores in the mouth, make the tongue and palates tender, etc.
2. Important to note is that you developed the recent sore throat after the thanksgiving meal, which could be indicative of an acid related condition called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
GERD symptoms include:
+Sore throat
+Dry cough (not always)
+Bitter taste in the mouth (usually after regurgitation of food or fluids into the mouth)
+Sensation of something swollen in the throat
+Hoarseness of voice
+Difficulty swallowing
+Heartburn
From how I am looking at things I feel GERD is more likely, but I would love to hear from you to know what you think, and also so you can let me know how many of the listed GERD symptoms you have.
I look forward to hearing from you in order to help you further.
Best wishes.
I do believe it is GERD, and wish for you to go about my instructions
Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.
With the symptoms you have, which are:
+Difficulty swallowing
+Sensation of lump in the throat (mainly causing the difficulty in swallowing)
+Heartburn
+Sore throat
GERD is the most probable cause and diagnosis in my opinion. And here are the treatment options which you should take up with your doctor or initiate yourself:
+Medication to block acid production: Lansoprazole 15 mg, one tablet every morning (available over-the-counter)
+Medications to neutralise the stomach acid: Gelusil, gaviscon, tums, etc; as advised on the bottle (also available over-the-counter)
+Drink plenty of water
+Avoid smoking
+Avoid spicy food
+Avoid oily food
+Avoid fried food
+Avoid alcohol
+Avoid carbonated drinks
+Avoid overeating
+Have 5-6 smaller meals instead of 2-3 larger ones
+Avoid long gaps between meals
+Avoid strenuous exercise
+Avoid taking pain management medications (especially NSAIDs)
+Medication to reduce acid production (e.g. famotidine, ranitidine, etc.): 1 tablet 15 minutes before each meal
Implement my suggestions in your daily routine at the earliest and write to me about 10-14 days after being on my suggestions strictly, and inform me about how you feel and whether this has helped or not.
I look forward to hearing some good news from you. Please also feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.
Best wishes.
You are most welcome sir :)
