Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: About a year ago I was working and Mangrove. A branch fell out of the mangroves and hit me in the back upper right side of my head. A few days later my head swelled up in the back all the way down behind my ear pretty significantly. There was burning and swelling. After 3 rounds of antibiotics the swelling went down. But a year later I still have a sore tender spot where the branche hit me. A little indent. The branch was not very big that hit me and did not knock me to my feet it was only a little uncomfortable. It wasn't until days later when the Real Pain started period and now a year later I still have a tender spot and a bruised dent

Brief Answer:
Nothing serious, take treatment as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
If the head injury was not severe without any loss of consciousness, seizures, weakness, bleeding from nose or ear, then possibility of severe damage to brain or skull is unlikely.
Sometimes impact leads to localized area of superficial soft tissue injury and swelling leading to some damage to small superficial nerves of pain, then the pain may persist for sometime.
Sometimes stress and repeated touching of involved area leads to persistent pain.
It is advisable not to touch or press the region repeatedly. Shift focus from the point.
Amitryptiline or nortryptiline can be taken for few weeks to reduce the pain.
No imaging is required.
Hope you recover early.

Do you know why the back of my head swelled up 3 days later after the branch hit me, could it have been bacteria on the branch or a spider bite do you think? It took three rounds of antibiotics to get rid of the rash and the swelling that accumulated after the branch hit me. Also about a month ago there was a abscess on the spot and I popped it and a little puss came out for some reason. Not sure why this abscess was there. My head did not swell because of the branch, the branch was not very big and only swelled three days later due to some kind of infection or something like that?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of infection may be there at that time

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Injury with wooden things lead to fungal infection more common than bacterial infection.
If pus was there with swelling and redness then infection should be considered a possibility with head injury.
Since at present no swelling or redness present then be assured and take treatment for headache as discussed earlier.
Wishing you good health and early recovery.
