Sore throat is a common symptom with throat infections and the root of the tongue might also feel sure with viral infections. These should not last more than a week so depending on when the pain started can help better determine the cause of it.

If the pain is for less than 3-4 days and you have no fever and no change in energy level or appetite than this is a common viral infection and will take a few more days before it completely goes. In this case just having some rest as needed, making sure you eat and drink frequent small amounts of food and water might be helpful.

If the sore throat is longer than 5-6 days, or you have fever for longer than 3 days or you feel weak and no appetite than it still can be a common infection but bacterial tonsillitis should be ruled out and you will need to see your doctor as in this case antibiotics might be needed.

If you have white patches in the mouth (tongue, throat, etc.) than a yeast infection should be suspected as you have diabetes and diabetes favors it.

So to conclude:
- if the symptoms are for less than 4-5 days and you have no fever or the fever is less than 3 days make sure you rest as possible and take paracetamol/ibuprofen to help with pain and very likely you will be much better in the next few days
- if you have fever for longer than 3 days or sore throat for longer than a week you will need to see your doctor as antibiotics might be needed or other conditions need to be ruled out.
- if white patches are in the mouth than yeast infection is very likely and specific treatment with antifungals is needed on this case and again your doctor is the one to prescribe them.
