What Causes Spiral Fractures In A Child?

Question: I have a question about spiral fractures in a five year old. I was informed my Grandson, who is five fell three feet, and broke his Tibia in three places, is that possible.....Wouldn't a fall greater than that be required for three spiral factures in his tibia?????

thanks for your question,

it would be unusual to have a segmental or comminuted fracture (multiple breaks) in this age group. it would be suggestive of a high energy injury. spiral fractures are the commonest type of fracture in this age group and can occasionally produce more than two pieces of bone.

the good news is that most tibial fractures in 5 year olds can be managed non operatively in a cast and predictably heal in 4-6 weeks without any significant complications.
