What Causes Sporadic Neck Pain And Severe Headache While Waking Up?

Question: Hello doctor,
Almost once every fortnight, when I wake in the morning mainly after deep sleep, there is a neck pain and the covers upto sever headache. Whole the day I will twist or jerk my head upto neck to get relief from the pain. The pain is acute. I go for self medication like Saridon or a pain killer which I know is not appropriate. This is going on for several year. Kindly reply.

Brief Answer:
Neurological examination during the event.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing further details.
Your clinical history so far does not appear to be leading to a specific diagnosis.I would like to ask one more question specifically-
Does this pain starts from head or neck?(It appears from your details that it starts from neck).
Secondly,is it more severe in head or neck, whenever it occurs?
In other words, what do you think-it is mainly a problem of head or neck?or starting from head and extending to neck or vice versa?

Hi sir,
Pain originates from neck. It does not originate from the head. However, Pain extends up to the head. It is felt that pain has travelled from the neck to head from the nerves on the backside of skull. Sir, I have tried to explain in layman language. It is more severe in head even then I feel that the root of pain is in the neck. Therefore I tend to twist my neck again and again in order to seek relief from pain. I think the main problem is with neck. It usually happens when I wake up in the morning.

Cervical X-ray/Mental relaxation exercises

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing further details.
Your clinical history, though, does not appear to be indicative of a specific diagnosis. However, closest differentials can be-
1)Migraine variant
2)Tension type headache(TTH)-it may be there even when a person says that he does not have mental tension because it is related to tension in the muscles and not mental tension.
3)Degenerative spine disease(cervical spondylosis)
I suggest you to get a cervical spine X-Ray done to look for any spondylotic changes.
At the same time, you should start doing regular mental relaxation exercises like meditation or yoga.It should bring improvement soon.
Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up else please close the thread, rate it and write a review.
