What Causes Stomach Discomfort After Having Sulfamethoxazole Along With Alcohol?

Question: I was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole-TMP on Wednesday. I did not realize that having a glass of wine would be a problem. I had like an eruption which caused pain, and severe rumbling, and acid came up badly. After throwing up, I felt better. The next day, I was nauseated all day. In the evening, I developed severe diarrhea. I am still having problems with pain and diarrhea, and it is Sunday evening. What should I do? Is this something I should be concerned might be causing severe damage to my stomach? Thanks.

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Sulphamethoxazole was prescribed for an infection. Was it a urinary infection or gastrointestinal? Your symptoms are that of gastroenteritis. If the symptoms started after you took Sulphamethoxazole, then you are probably allergic to sulpha group of medicines. You should stop it and see your doctor.
In the meantime you can use an antacid or PPI for symptomatic relief. Drink oral rehydration fluids so that you don't become dehydrated.
There is nothing to worry in most cases as the symptoms would subside and you will be better. The gastritis will heal with no damage.
If your symptoms get worse or if you are vomiting, it is better to go to the ER.
