What Causes Sudden Feelings Of Shivering With Cold?
I get goose bumps at odd times, even in bed. I'll be nice and warm then suddenly I feel cold with goose bumps. I have been under some stress for the last 2 years. I do get tachycardia occasionally and have peripheral neuropathy, not diabetic. Not sure what to do. I am 71 years old. Thanks XXXXXXX
Not goose bumps, Just shivering and Cold Intolerance
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and i understand your concern. These sudden feelings of shivering with cold are likely due to the age related hypothermia. All you need is an extra blanket for keeping you warm.
Apart from it i would like to keep an eye on serotonin levels as the medications like gabapentins and anti depressants and depression itself causes increase in serotonin levels and that may cause these shivering symptoms out of the blue.
Also i would like to advise some thyroid functions test as age related hypothyroidism can explain this cold intolerance.
As far as goose bumps terminology is concerned, Its a misnomer in common day to day use. Goose bumps / Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a genetic disorder of keratinization of hair follicles of the skin. It is an extremely common benign condition that manifests as small, rough folliculocentric keratotic papules, often described as chicken bumps, chicken skin, or goose bumps, in characteristic areas of the body, particularly the outer-upper arms and thighs.
Nut shell you don't have goose bumps, just shivering and cold intolerance. And age related hypothermia, increased serotonin secondary to medications or or hypothyroidism are some of the possibilities.
Keeping your self warmer with electric blankets will help.
I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
