What Causes Sudden Involuntary Movements In Lips During Sleep?
Question: Hi, I woke up because my lips moved involuntarily for a second or two. It happened several times. But now that I'm awake it hasn't happened. I dreamt a horse was whinnying but when I started to wake I realized it was me. Very scary.
Brief Answer:
You are describing sleep myoclonus
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
What you are explaining is called myoclonus in medical terms. It is a contractile movement of the muscles that occurs predominantly during sleep but can occur at other times as well. It is harmless and you need not worry about it. Often it is associated with electrolyte imbalance and taking juicy fruits like citrus fruits can be helpful since they contain plenty of potassium.
Hope that helps.
