What Causes Sudden Pain Across Nasal Bridge?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jan 2016
Question: What causes a sudden spontaneous pain on the bridge of the nose, followed by bruising that develops over the next few hours.
It was very painful to touch for the first few days and bruising darkened. No bruising near my eyes.
It is still bruised (dark now, but fading slowly) down the bridge and off to one side of my nose, a week later.

There was no injury; I haven't banged it or knocked it. I just woke up and it just started to hurt a few hours later followed by the bruising.
My nose bridge is still somewhat tender now, but slowly improving. It does feel "odd" to some extent, but maybe that is just the leftover bruising.
Also, just to make it very clear - I do not (and have never) taken illicit substances!

Brief Answer:
blood vessel rupture

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It is fairly common to have a spontaneous blood vessel rupture. If it happens in a sensitive area like your nose it can be quite painful. It would only be a concern if it happens frequently. Bruising is just bleeding under the skin so when you have a spontaneous blood vessel rupture it appears much like a bruise. The pain is from the stretching of tissues around the inflammation. Blood outside of blood vessels is irritating and causes an inflammatory response. This is all probably normal and all evidence of the bruising should resolve in a few weeks. If it does not resolve or if you get recurrent bleeding again frequently then you need to see a doctor for some blood testing.
Best wishes to you for a rapid recovery.
