What Causes Sudden Peripheral Vision Loss While On Vegan Diet?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: On Dec 21 I switched to a vegan, no oil, no salt, no sugar diet.
In the past few days i have had two episodes where i bent over and stood up, and my eyes went into tunnel vision for 15 to 30 seconds and then resolved itself.
Im concerned that without salt my blood pressure has gone down too much.
What should I do, get a blood pressure cuff and monitor myself? Or should i be going to the doctor right away?

Brief Answer:
Low blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you had a near syncope episode. This could be related to your change in diet but it could also be just postural hypotension from bending over ang then standing up. I would recommend either getting a blood pressure cuff or going to a fire station or pharmacy that has an automated blood pressure machine. The best would be to purchase a cuff. Then I would monitor your pressures. if the continue to be low or you have repeat near syncope then see your doctor. Keep track of your pressures and present that to your doctor and that way he/she will have information they can use.

You pressures could be low from low sodium but that would be unusual despite you being on a low sodium diet. Your Vegetables will have plenty of sodium to compensate for the lower salt use. When you see your doctor they will do labs and see how your electrolytes are doing. You may decide to add a little salt to your diet now to see if that helps improve your symptoms.

In summary
1. low blood pressure and near syncope
2. Check blood pressures at home or pharmacy and records them
3. Add a little salt to your diet
4. If continued near syncope or recordings are low then see doctor

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions
