What Causes Sudden Thinning Of Hair, Heavy Menstrual Bleeding And Acne?
I was wondering if Bioidentical hormone therapy is as risky as birth control, and if it actually works as good as birth control to control hormone fluctuations. I have thinning hair, acne and heavy periods and this all started when I turned 40!
Equally effective and risky.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Bioidentical hormone therapy is as effective and as risky as birth control or other synthetic hormone therapy. It will help in controlling the hormone fluctuations and will decrease the bleeding and regularize bleeding patterns but the risks associated are the same as with birth control. Do take these only under the supervision of your gynecologist.
The symptoms that you have can be controlled well with hormone therapy. Do continue with thyroid hormone supplements as suggested.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thyroid hormone and birth control both are needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Thyroid hormone and hormonal therapy both are needed to control the bleeding and cycle pattern.
It is better to start with birth control which is a regulated drug and side effects are properly known and studied. It will help in regulating the cycles. Out of bioidentical hormones and birth control, i usually prefer a birth control for my patients and they respond well to it.
Hope my answer is helpful.

My TSH is 3.6, and my gynaecologist gave me 50 msg synthoid. The gastro told me that was ridiculous and I shouldn't take this. What do you think?
I do feel like I have all the symptoms of subclinical thyroid, some being throat pain, and hair loss, and acne and heavy periods, so I was feeling really good about this treatment plan, until the gastro told me I shouldn't do this at all!
Please advise!!
Synthyroid is not needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
A TSH level of 3.6 is within normal limits and does not need synthyroid supplements. Those symptoms that you have could be due to perimenopausal change in hormones. Taking synthyroid will not help.
It is better to gradually reduce the dosage and then stop taking it after consulting your gynecologist.
