What Causes Swelling And Bruise Mark Around The Injection Site?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: I had a shot of phenagran yesterday because of nausea during a headache. It was injected into my hip and the injection site is extremely swollen, I have a large multi colored bruise, and it hurts a lot. I'm not sure what to do, or if I should worry about it. I've taken advil, and tylenol, I put ice to reduce the swelling, but nothing seemsto be helping.

Brief Answer:
Time to go in to be seen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It sounds like you are doing everything right. Icing the area for 15 minutes at a time (with a thin cloth between the cold source and skin) is the thing to do for the first 24 to 48 hours.

If you are having any pain or numbness in your leg, or if the pain and swelling are extreme as you've described, then you need to go back in to be seen. Bruising can happen from an injection if a blood vessel is nicked but extreme swelling and pain are not expected.

So go in and have it checked out.
