What Causes Swelling And Bruising In The Leg After A Fall?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Question: I fell on my knee hard and it swelled up the leg and turn purple 9 days ago. I had it xrayed and it was find. But the lump across the knee cap is hot and hurts when touched and throws. What can I do and do I need to worry about a clot?

I'm pretty sure I have bursitis because I had recently done fell on the right knee which took 6 weeks to heal. But I never had a hard knot. I took 10 mg of codone and it only lowered the pain form a 10 to a 6 in pain level.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

How was your day?

Hope this message finds you in good health.

I have gone through your query in detail and understand your concern.

if the xrays were ok,then a good sign is that there is no bony injury.
from the present symptoms, its more likely to be an infected bursitis. after the trauma, the hematoma that has been accumulated hasnt resolved.

it has transformed into a solid clot. the fact that the swelling is hot means that there is an infection inside for sure.

i hope you are non diabetic. if you are not sure then get blood sugar levels checked as this may be the reason for infection.

at present, you should apply ice packs, compression bandage, keep the leg elevated. start on broad spectrum antibiotics, anti inflammatory tablets, fibrinolytic enzymes. look for the progress of symptoms.

if,within 3-5 days, the local temperature comes back to normal, then it means that it is resolving. if the symptoms worsen, then you should consult a doctor and get the hematoma drained out by surgical method. This will the last option though.

I hope your question has been answered.
