What Causes Swelling And Pain In Ear Of A 7 Year Old?
Otitis EXTERNA
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that your son is having repeated episodes of ear pain.
As per your clinical details, it could be due to otiis externa secondary to eczema or adeno-tonsillitis (source of infection in kids).
I suggest you to to consult ent surgeon and give detailed history (allergy, dandruff), get detailed ent examination (tonsillitis, adenoiditis), If necessary blood tests (absolute eosinophilic count, IgE-allergy). Depending on the examination reports further treatment is required accordingly.
As a preventive measure, protect the ear from cold breeze or water (by plugging dry cotton plug). Avoid freezer products (ice creams/curd) to stop repeated cold episodes (cold can lead to ear infection). Stop him from self cleaning or putting ear buds.
In case of drug resistance, same antibiotic will not help. You have to visit a local doctor for proper antibiotic.
If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
EAR DRUM INFECTION-NEEDS ANTIBIOTIC
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.
Watery discharge with popping sound denotes, acute otitis media (ear drum infection with or with out ear drum perforation).
As such, candibiotic ear drops contains local anesthetic + antibiotic + anti fungal + steroid, best works in itching or pain. Continue same drops (3drops/3times) with pain killer (brufen 200mg) twice daily. Antibiotic can be started once evaluated by an ent surgeon.
Yes. You can travel with these medications. Hearing loss depends on presence of perforation (traveling will not cause any infection, please follow the instructions, what, I have already mentioned).
Hope, I have answered your query. Take care.
As per your advice, I consulted an ENT surgeon. He thinks it is fungal infection aggravated by my son scratching his ear with fingernails or some sharp objects. At present, he has prescribed Clotrin drops twice and Soliwax drops once for five days. I am to go back after a week for follow up. Thankfully the eardrums are not damaged.
Thank you very much for your advice. It was very helpful.
Regards, XXXXXXX
