What Causes Swelling And Pain Near The Nostrils?
Question: I am an 81 year-old male in good health. I have been diagnosed with osteonecrosis because 3 of my teeth have been extracted within the last year and CD scan taken by an oral surgeon shows deteriorating bone structure - especially in the upper right jaw where teeth #s 1,2, and 3 are gone.
Today I woke up with swelling, redness and pain in the area to the right of my nostril and in vertical line with my eyeball. That might be where the root of tooth #4 is located which the CD scan shows is not well connected to the bone tissue.
So - I have swelling and pain and my oral surgeon, periodontist and dentist won't be back until Tuesday morning. I am currently on doxycillian (have been for over 3 weeks). I am putting cold compresses over the area.
Is there any other recommended treatment to carry me over the long, holiday weekend?

Brief Answer:
I recomemnd Amoxicillin-Clavulate: 1000mg twice daily!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.
I have reviewed your information fully. This is suggestive of a possible tooth abscess. Recommended treatment is amoxicillin calvulanic acid, 1000mg twice daily. If you however develop a fever and start feeling terrible, there will be need for you to go to the hospital as this could be sepsis, which requires parenteral medications. Doxycycline alone would not be a good choice for infections of the mouth. Do you have any pain medications? If not, add tylenol and Ibuprofen for pain control in the interim.
I hope this guides and helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
