Posted on Mon, 25 Apr 2016
Question: Have a left hand that developed a huge swelling on top of left hand couple days ago. A lump started small and grew that became very painful.Got to an ER. Ice helped a lot, had an X-ray that was negative for a break, however showing arthritis. The swelling is pronounced in lower joint of ring finger and baby finger with a lot of swelling and very purplish coloration on palm and topside of hand. ER doctors wrapped with elastic bandage, icing, Anti Inflammatory. Hand specialist relooked at X-rays No break, wasn't sure what caused it, because there was no injury and has prescribed Medrol 4 mg.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to arthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The swelling of the left hand with no history of injury can be due to inflammation of the joints or arthritis. Icing, anti inflammatory medicines and elastic bandage are the correct treatment. Taking steroids - Medrol will also help in decreasing the inflammation. The presence of infection like abscess also needs to be ruled out.
Do monitor the swelling for 2-3 days and see if it improves. In case the swelling persists then do consult your orthopedician for further evaluation.
I hope this answers your query.
