What Causes Swelling And Redness In Eye?
Question: Over the past two weeks, I have been having swelling and redness only in one eye, accompanied by nasal stuffiness and an itchy feeling in the throat. Today, the eye itching is much worse and swelling is a bit more than usual. It is causing me discomfort. What could be the cause? How should I treat it?
Brief Answer:
Allergy
Detailed Answer:
My Dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
This appears to be an allergic reaction as it is accompanied by allergic symptoms of the nose as well. The lining of the eye is continued in the nose and these are the the two layers that are exposed to outside allergens.
What you have to do other than avoiding exposure to outside allergens is to use anti allergic eye drops as well as to take oral anti allergic tablets also as this has been there for two weeks and has to be tackled systemically as well.
Use of protective gear when moving out as well as washing eyes with cold water is helpful.
Please do get back to me in case of any further query in this regard.

Thank you for the detailed response doctor. On a gp's advice, I have been taking mountain LC since three days. It is a one week course. Are there any eye drops that I can use? Also, for hoe many days and in what dosage should I take them?
I want to be sure that it is eliminated entirely.

The advice of your gp is spot on and continue with it for a few days. As the symptoms subside you can stop it.
You have to look for eye drops which contain chlorphenaramine maleate. These drops will be milder and can be continued for longer period of time. Then there is a group of steroid drops which should always be used under supervision and in cases like your where things tend to recur and long term exposure causes problems. So that group is for short term exposure.
There is another group including bisine eye drop and lubricants like tears naturale, refresh tears eye drop which are also useful and soothing.
Your local doctor will know about the commonly available brands containing those drug in the locality.
